Avant boys fall through ice at Bird Creek in Osage County

Two young boys from Osage County died over the weekend after falling through ice on Bird Creek near the town of Avant, a tragedy that has prompted renewed safety warnings from authorities across northeastern Oklahoma. The boys, ages 8 and 9, were reported missing after slipping into the icy water while playing near the creek. Search crews later recovered both children following an extensive emergency response involving multiple agencies.

According to first responders, the incident unfolded quickly as the ice covering the creek was not thick enough to support their weight. One of the boys was located near the creek bank shortly after the search began, while the second child was discovered nearly four hours later downstream after crews expanded the search area.

Emergency response and investigation

Local law enforcement, firefighters, and volunteer responders worked together in freezing conditions to locate the boys. Agencies assisting included Osage County Emergency Management, local fire departments, and investigators from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), who often support cases involving child deaths or complex recovery efforts.

Authorities say conditions were dangerous, with unstable ice, cold water, and limited visibility complicating search efforts. Officials confirmed that the medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death, but exposure and drowning are suspected.

Safety warnings about ice and winter waterways

Following the tragedy, officials issued renewed reminders that frozen creeks, ponds, and lakes across Oklahoma remain unpredictable even after several days of cold weather. Safety guidance from Oklahoma Emergency Management and the National Weather Service stresses that ice thickness can vary widely and may not support even a child’s weight.

Emergency managers say parents and guardians should discourage children from walking or playing on frozen water and remind them that what appears solid on the surface can quickly give way. First responders also note that cold water shock can occur within minutes, making self-rescue extremely difficult.

Community members in Avant and surrounding areas have expressed grief and support for the families affected, as local leaders encourage residents to stay vigilant and avoid risky winter conditions.
