Arcadia Lake Shooting Discussion Lasts Less Than 10 Minutes
The Arcadia Lake shooting received less than ten minutes of discussion during Monday night’s Edmond City Council meeting as city leaders faced growing concerns from residents following the deadly mass shooting earlier this month.
During the meeting, Edmond Mayor Mark Nash asked City Manager A.J. Krieger to compile a full review of current lake access policies and procedures as officials consider possible safety changes at Arcadia Lake.
The brief discussion comes as the investigation into the Arcadia Lake shooting continues following the deadly violence at the Scissortail Campground on May 3.
According to investigators, more than 80 rounds of gunfire were fired during the incident, leaving over 20 people injured and one teenager dead.
Arcadia Lake Shooting Sparks Safety Concerns
Residents living near Arcadia Lake urged city leaders to address growing public safety concerns during the council meeting.
Edmond resident Rebecca Walther told city leaders the community needs reassurance that the lake remains safe for families and visitors.
Walther also raised concerns about increasing drug and alcohol activity near the lake, saying the environment contributed to conditions surrounding the tragedy.
The victim in the Arcadia Lake shooting was identified as 18-year-old Avianna Smith-Gray, a high school senior preparing to graduate.
Edmond Police say the shooting occurred during an unpermitted “Sunday Funday” gathering at the Scissortail Campground area.
Police Continue Arcadia Lake Shooting Investigation
Investigators believe the Arcadia Lake shooting may have been gang-related and say the violence began after a dispute between two women escalated.
Authorities have arrested 18-year-old Jaylan Ahmad Davis, who is currently facing a first-degree felony murder charge.
Police have also indicated they are searching for at least one additional suspect connected to the shooting.
The scale of the violence shocked many residents after investigators revealed more than 80 rounds were fired during the chaos.
The investigation remains active as law enforcement agencies continue reviewing evidence and witness statements tied to the Arcadia Lake shooting.
Edmond Leaders Reviewing Lake Policies
City leaders say the policy review requested by Mayor Nash could help guide future safety decisions involving Arcadia Lake access and event oversight.
Residents seeking additional public discussion about the tragedy can also attend the upcoming Edmond Matters meeting scheduled Wednesday at the Edmond Railyard.
