Arcadia Lake safety concerns addressed after mass shooting incident

Arcadia Lake safety concerns are now front and center after a weekend shooting at a large gathering drew national attention and raised questions about security at one of Edmond’s most popular public spaces.

On Monday, Edmond Mayor Mark Nash addressed the community at City Hall but made it clear he would not discuss specifics of the ongoing investigation.

“Before I begin, I will not be discussing the ongoing investigation or the injured parties or their conditions,” Nash said.

Arcadia Lake safety concerns follow unsanctioned event

The Arcadia Lake safety concerns stem from a “Sunday Funday” gathering promoted on social media that drew a large crowd before turning violent.

City leaders emphasized the event was unsanctioned and unpermitted, contributing to the lack of oversight.

“We will not allow unlawful or unpermitted activities to jeopardize the safety of our community or the integrity of our public spaces,” Nash said.

Public safety at city parks is overseen by agencies like the Edmond Police Department.

Mayor reassures public while acknowledging limits

The Arcadia Lake safety concerns prompted direct questions about whether the lake remains safe.

Nash responded firmly, saying, “Absolutely it is.”

When asked if he would personally visit, Nash added, “Would I take my family there today? Absolutely, I would, yes. Would I take it at midnight? No, absolutely not.”

Officials say there is no ongoing threat to the public, despite the weekend violence.

Community safety messaging and response efforts are often coordinated with agencies like the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI).

Security gaps and changes now under review

The Arcadia Lake safety concerns have also highlighted operational gaps.

Nash confirmed that staff leave the fee station at 6 p.m., and there was no security patrol present Sunday night when the incident occurred.

Camping is allowed 24 hours a day, but reservations must be made by adults.

City leaders say they are now evaluating stronger permitting processes, increased law enforcement presence, and enhanced park security measures.

Public land management and safety planning are supported by agencies like the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation.

City emphasizes resilience moving forward

The Arcadia Lake safety concerns remain under discussion, but city leaders are focusing on recovery.

“Incidents like this are rare, and they do not define us,” Nash said.“The actions of a few individuals do not reflect the character, strength, or values of our city.”

Officials say additional updates will be released as the investigation continues and new policies are considered.
