Patients Recovering After Large-Scale Incident
The City of Weatherford says all 34 patients who were hospitalized after last week’s ammonia leak have now been released. The final patient was discharged Sunday, marking the end of what city officials called a “very fortunate outcome,” given the size and severity of the incident.
Mayor Mike Brown said the community is grateful no lives were lost. The leak happened when a semi-truck parked near a hotel released a significant amount of ammonia, forcing evacuations and sickening dozens.
First Responders Impacted
Fourteen Weatherford police officers suffered varying degrees of exposure, with several requiring medical treatment after entering the affected area during the initial emergency response. Officials say all officers are expected to recover, though some may experience lingering symptoms common with ammonia exposure.
Federal Investigation Underway
The Environmental Protection Agency has now demobilized its response team, signaling that air-quality levels in the area have returned to normal.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is now leading the investigation into the exact cause of the leak, including whether a mechanical failure or valve malfunction occurred on the tanker truck.
