State Pushes Forward in Death Penalty Case
Attorney General Gentner Drummond is asking the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals to set a February 12 execution date for death row inmate Kendrick Simpson.
Simpson was convicted of killing two men during a fight at an Oklahoma City nightclub in 2006.
Simpson Seeking Delay
Simpson argues his execution should be delayed until a ruling is issued in a civil lawsuit claiming that Oklahoma’s current execution procedures violate constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment.
His attorneys say the pending lawsuit must be resolved before any execution can move forward.
Court Will Decide Timing
The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals will now consider both sides — Drummond’s request to proceed and Simpson’s request for delay. No hearing date has yet been announced.
Background of the Case
Simpson has remained on death row for more than a decade as his case has moved through the appeals system. The upcoming decision will determine whether the state can move forward in early 2026.
