988 Mental Health Crisis Line Usage Surges

Oklahoma’s 988 Mental Health Crisis Line has already handled approximately 57,000 phone calls and more than 11,000 text messages so far this year, according to state mental health officials. The service provides immediate support for people experiencing mental health emergencies, emotional distress, or suicidal thoughts.

Federal Funding Ends This Fall

Despite the heavy use of the crisis line, federal funding for 988 is scheduled to end in September, leaving Oklahoma responsible for the full cost of operating the service. The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health has included $5.7 million in its upcoming budget request to maintain the program.

Officials say without continued funding, staffing levels, response times, and service availability could be at risk.

Why 988 Has Become Essential

The 988 system was launched nationwide to reduce reliance on law enforcement and emergency rooms during mental health crises. Instead, callers are routed to trained counselors who can de-escalate situations and connect people with local resources.

State leaders say call volume demonstrates the need for sustained investment, particularly as demand for mental health services continues to rise statewide.
