Texas Earthquake Shakes Western Oklahoma After Rare 5.0 Magnitude Quake
A 5.0 magnitude Texas earthquake early Thursday morning rattled communities across the Texas Panhandle and was felt by residents throughout western Oklahoma, making it one of the strongest earthquakes recorded in the region in more than a century.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck at 5:21 a.m. CDT, waking residents in several Oklahoma communities. While no injuries or damage have been reported, the event was widely felt across the Southern Plains and is considered unusual for the area.
Texas Earthquake Felt Across Western Oklahoma
The USGS reported the earthquake's epicenter was located about 24 miles south-southeast of Spearman, Texas, or roughly 23 miles northwest of Miami, Texas.
The quake occurred at a relatively shallow depth of approximately 3.5 miles, allowing the shaking to be felt across a much larger area than many deeper earthquakes.
Residents in western and northwestern Oklahoma, including Woodward, Elk City and surrounding communities, reported feeling the early morning tremor.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Program, shallow earthquakes often produce stronger surface shaking because seismic energy has less distance to travel before reaching the ground.
Officials said there have been no reports of injuries or structural damage associated with the earthquake.
One Of The Strongest Quakes In The Region
While Oklahoma has experienced thousands of earthquakes over the past decade, this event originated in the Texas Panhandle, where earthquakes of this size remain relatively uncommon.
According to regional historical data cited by The Oklahoman, the quake is only the fourth earthquake measuring magnitude 4.0 or greater recorded in this portion of the Texas Panhandle since 1900.
The USGS says earthquakes of this magnitude can often be felt for hundreds of miles, particularly when they occur at shallow depths in areas with stable underlying geology.
Although no aftershocks had been recorded immediately following Thursday's event, seismologists say smaller aftershocks remain possible during the coming days.
