The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation receives funding from the National Institutes of Health to look at a specific protein with links to Alzheimer’s disease. Doctor Heather Rice will conduct two years of research on the protein called CD151 and developing ways to prevent the accumulation of it in the brain. In the longer term, such studies could pave the way for new treatments for Alzheimer’s, which accounts for 60 percent to 80 percent of all types of dementia.
