OKC United Unveiled As Oklahoma City's New Professional Soccer Team

OKC United is officially the name of Oklahoma City's new professional soccer club, with Mayor David Holt unveiling the team's identity during Wednesday's State of the City address as the city continues expanding its presence on the national sports stage.

The new OKC United franchise is scheduled to begin play in 2028, coinciding with the opening of the new MAPS 4 Multipurpose Stadium in downtown Oklahoma City. The club will compete in the USL Championship, one of the top professional soccer leagues in the United States.

OKC United Branding Honors Oklahoma Heritage

The OKC United identity was designed to reflect Oklahoma's history, culture and landscape.

The club's crest features an arrowhead-shaped shield, honoring Native American heritage while showcasing an interlocking OKC monogram at its center. Surrounding the logo are 39 sun rays, representing the 39 federally recognized Native American tribes headquartered in Oklahoma.

A zig-zag border around the crest pays tribute to legendary Oklahoma athlete Jim Thorpe, inspired by his Sac and Fox name, Wa-Tho-Huk, meaning "Bright Path."

The team's colors—midnight blue, pink sunset and ivory cloud—were selected to reflect the changing colors of Oklahoma skies.

The branding was developed by nationally recognized sports designer Matthew Wolff, working alongside former Oklahoma City Thunder star Russell Westbrook, who also joins the club's ownership group. New Stadium Will Anchor Soccer's Future In Oklahoma City

Construction is already underway on the MAPS 4 Multipurpose Stadium, which is expected to become the permanent home of OKC United when the club begins play in 2028.

The $121 million stadium, located in lower Bricktown, will initially seat more than 10,000 fans and was designed by internationally recognized architecture firm Populous. The venue's open north end will frame the downtown Oklahoma City skyline while allowing flexibility for future expansion.

Beyond professional soccer, the stadium is designed to host concerts, community events and a future United Football League (UFL) franchise.

Star-Studded Ownership Group Backs New Franchise

The club will be majority-owned by Echo Investment Capital and includes one of the most recognizable ownership groups in professional sports.

Investors include Russell Westbrook, Baker Mayfield, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Jalen Williams, Jozy Altidore and The Chickasaw Nation, bringing together leaders from professional basketball, football, soccer, Olympic competition and Oklahoma tribal leadership.

City leaders believe the ownership group reflects Oklahoma City's growing reputation as a destination for major league sports and entertainment. The announcement also comes as the city prepares to host Olympic softball and canoe slalom competitions during the 2028 Summer Olympics, while continuing construction on a new downtown arena for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
