The Oklahoma House Speaker has okayed a study of the initiative petition process requested by Democratic Representative Mickey Dollens. Oklahoma is one of 26 states that allow citizens to petition to put a state question on the ballot. Democratic State Representative Mickey Dollens says the process in this state is the most difficult, which is why he’s backing a study that was just okayed.
Republicans nationwide are taking steps to make initiative petitions harder to make and pass, which Dollens attributes to his good working relationship with Speaker Charles McCall.
"He has always been my speaker, and we have always had great lines of communication," Dollens said.
Dollens calls initiative petitions “direct democracy,” and he says the people of Oklahoma need the retain the ability to put questions before voters.
