Canoe Slalom World Championships Bring Olympic Competition To Oklahoma City
The Canoe Slalom World Championships are underway in Oklahoma City, bringing more than 350 athletes from 60 countries to Riversport OKC as competitors chase world titles and qualifying opportunities ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games.
The Canoe Slalom World Championships give Oklahomans a chance to experience Olympic-caliber competition two years before Oklahoma City hosts canoe slalom and softball events during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Olympic Athletes From Around The World Arrive In Oklahoma City
The week-long competition officially kicked off with a Parade of Nations, live performances by local musicians, fireworks and community activities celebrating the start of the championships.
Athletes representing 50 countries have traveled to Oklahoma City, filling Riversport OKC with competitors, coaches and fans from around the world.
Richard Fox, chair of the International Canoe Slalom Technical Committee and a former Olympian, said the event highlights Oklahoma City's growing role on the international sports stage.
"It's the world championships," Fox said. "The best athletes from 50 countries here, from all over the world."
Riversport OKC Executive Director Chris Sorensen said the international atmosphere has been impossible to miss.
"I feel like every time I'm walking around, I hear a different language from a different country as they're talking to their athletes," Sorensen said.
He added that hosting visitors from around the world gives Oklahoma City an opportunity to showcase the community before the Olympic Games arrive in 2028.
More Than Competition At Riversport OKC
The championships offer much more than elite canoe slalom competition.
Visitors can also enjoy food trucks, a Route 66 Car Show, performances by local artists and an interactive Olympic experience designed for families and sports fans.
Organizers hope the additional attractions encourage residents to spend the day at Riversport OKC while experiencing one of the world's premier canoe slalom competitions.
The event also serves as a preview of what Oklahoma City will host during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, when the city becomes an official Olympic venue.
Events Continue Through Friday
Competition and activities are scheduled Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Riversport OKC.
The championships are expected to draw spectators throughout the week as athletes compete for international medals and continue their journey toward Olympic competition.
For Oklahoma City, the event offers another opportunity to demonstrate its ability to host major international sporting events while welcoming thousands of visitors from across the globe ahead of the 2028 Olympics.
